BARGAIN BANGKOK

Shopping / Sightseeing / Dining / Afterdark
Not long ago just one long traffic jam, Bangkok moves around much easier these days, with congestion eased by elevated freeways and the new light-rail Bangkok Transit System (BTS). But the best way to get around is still by tuk-tuk, although motorcycle taxis are even quicker - so long as you're not nervous!

Bangkok is also remarkably cheap - from the restaurants and bars to shops and markets. So make shopping a priority and haggle over prices with a smile! Don't miss Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest "flea markets" with over 8,600 stalls and vendors and over 200,000 visitors on Saturday and Sunday. Snack on superb hawker Thai cuisine. For more bargain-hunting, try the huge, chaotic MBK Shopping Center at Siam Square which has thousands of shops and great prices.
< Sightseeing >
Beyond some magnificent temples, any sightseeing tour of Bangkok should include Jim Thompson's House for authentic Thai architecture and South-East Asian art. It's a haven of tranquillity amid the hectic city. Chinatown, which dates back to 1782, is one of the most fabulous places in the world to eat Chinese food.
< Dining >
Sukhumvit is by far the trendiest part of Bangkok for restaurants and nightlife. The Italian food at Zanotti's is as good as anywhere in Italy. Shutters Cafe is owned by some of Thailand's top models and very "in". Old Leng Cafe is wacky. Bangkok is a beautifully restored mansion restaurant. After dark, the dubious attractions of Patpong are fading, although the night-market is packed with "copy" designer items. The "Castle" group runs the most honest girlie-bars.
< Afterdark >
Check-out some of the biggest and funkiest discos in the world - a sightseeing attraction in their own right after midnight. Dance Fever and Hollywood pack-in huge crowds with great Thai bands and dancers. Disco Bowling is a crazy night out on Friday and Saturday nights at the Brunswick RCA Entertainment Bowling Center, with a pumping disco, florescent lighting and luminous bowling balls! Lucifer gets going when the nearby Patpong bars close. RCA (Royal City Avenue) is a night out by itself, with over 30 bars, discos and hip restaurants.
